Three Easy Steps for Rapid Search Engine Success
Search engine success is the holy grail for everyone who wants to be found online and while it is not guaranteed there are some techniques that are essential to boost your ranking when people are searching online. Here are three steps you need to ensure are integrated into your website design and development:
1.
Chose your website address carefully: If you are starting out with a new website try to get a domain name (i.e. website url address) that includes keywords that people, searching for what you do, will enter into Google for their online search.
For example it is better to be called www.greenwichplumber.co.uk than www.JohnJonesLtd.co.uk because people wanting a plumber in Greenwich are likely to search for ‘Greenwich plumber’ or ‘plumber in Greenwich’ but they are not going to search for ‘John Jones Ltd’ unless they already know John Jones. If your website address includes the words ‘Greenwich Plumber’ Google search engine already knows you fit what is being searched for, that give you a big head start in the rankings. Test it for yourself – put in a generic search term and see how many of the results include that term, or some of the words in that term in their url.
2.
If you are already up and running and cannot or don’t want to change your website name read on as you still need to ensure you are using keywords in a way that will get you found. First do some keyword research and choose keywords that are less competitive: Google provides a free keyword research tool although it is not perfect - you might want to spend a little and use a more proficient keyword research tool like Jaaxy, or ask an SEO specialist to assist you. If you are on a tight budget better to use Google’s Keyword tool than not do any research. Use it to assess how many people are searching for the terms/keywords that describe what you do. But beware of choosing keywords with high competition – ideally you are looking for keywords with at least 1.000 searches in your area (e.g. UK) but rated as ‘Low’ competition by the Google search tool. It is better to get a high ranking for a low competition keyword and get found by some people, than get a low ranking for a very popular keyword and get no ranking and therefore get found by no one.
3.
Once you have researched some good keywords use one or at most two keywords per page on your website. Use the keywords in your page name, page title, at the start of the first paragraph on your page and at least once in every 100 words in the text on your page. e.g.
- website name is www.greenwichplumber.co.uk
- top keyword for your page is ‘emergency plumbing service‘
- page name heading could be ‘Emergency Plumbing Service – On Call 24 Hours, 7 Days a Week ‘
- and the webpage address could be www.greenwichplumber.co.uk/emergencyplumbingservice
- the first paragraph could start – Are you looking for an emergency plumbing service ……?
Do these three things and you will be well on the way to Search Engine success.
